A thermocouple consists of two dissimilar metal conductors welded at one end. When a temperature difference exists between the welded junction and the reference end, a thermoelectric potential is generated in the circuit. This potential is proportional to the temperature difference, allowing temperature to be calculated by measuring the potential.
